The Cullen's might not be the hottest vampire family rattling around in Stephenie Meyer's head after viewing the leaked Volturi pictures. Sure the Cullen's have the looks, but the Volturi have power and clout over the vampire regime. Take a journey to Italy with us as we explore one of the oldest and most well-groomed vampire clan living inside Meyer's head.
"The Volturi aren't supposed to be the villains, the way they seem to you. They are the foundation of our peace and civilization," says Edward Cullen. The Volturi are comparable to any noble family you read about in text books. Like many nobles, the Volturi have a firm set of rules to have been in power for over three thousand years. As the largest vampire coven, residing in Volterra, Italy is very different from the Cullen family we grew to love in Twilight.
There are many things that connect The Volturi with the Cullen's such as their special powers. Just like the Cullen family, the Volturi have special gifts that have been honed for hundreds upon thousands of years. The main difference between the Cullen's and the Volturi is diet. The Volturi do not follow the strict vegetarian diet that make the Cullen's different; they are not afraid of devouring their meals as seen in New Moon.
The Twilight Saga: New Moon introduces a whole new pack of players that are getting as much attention as the hunky wolf pack. The Volturi Family lives in Volterra, Italy, far from the safety and comfort of Folks, Washington but once Edward decides he can no longer live without Bella, he makes the trek overseas. Edward seeks help from the Volturi after envisioning Bella dead and wanted nothing more than to just die. As Edward stands to accept his fate, we meet the almightily Volturi Family who hold the key to Edward's future. Twilighters. get ready to fall in love with new sexy vampires that ooze both power and strength.
Aro is the alpha leader of the Volturi clan and shares the leadership role with Marcus and Caius. Aro has the special gift of telepathy and uses it to understand what others are thinking. The actor Michael Sheen has been cast to play Aro and his additive Twitter habits onset prove he is ready for this part.
Marcus holds leadership positions within the Volturi clan but his apathey often puts him at risk. Unknown to Marcus, centuries ago, his fellow leader Aro killed his wife Didyme, who happened to be Aro's sister. Marcus has the special gift of being able to recognize and understand relationships which must have been something he learned with dealing with the death of his wife. Marcus is played by Christopher Heyerdahl who faithfully played Todd the Wraith in Stargate Atlantis from 2004-2009.
Caius is a staple in Volterra where he resides with his wife Athenodora. In New Moon, Caius was very displeased when Aro let Edward and Bella leave Italy. Aro calmed Caius down by telling him that there will be time in the future and requested him to be patient. Caius is played by the handsome British actor Jamie Campbell Bower who also has a serious Twitter addiction.
Jane is the bitter and ruthless twin sister of Alec and is a member of the Volturi guard. Jane is played by the uber talented Dakota Fanning who is no stranger to the big screen. Starring most recently in Caroline, Push, and the award winning The Secret Life of Bees, Fanning is no stranger to success and fits perfectly into this cast.
One of the highest ranked guards within the Volturi, Alec shares the same special gift as his twin sister Jane which is what got him this position. Alec and Jane both have the gift to cut off people's senses, therefore rendering them blind, deaf, and dumb. Alec is played by the Canadian actor Cameron Bright who has spent the last nine years acting in Hollywood.
